The Wisdom of God -
May 13, 2007
James1:5-8
5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

Our Position During Trials
May 20, 2007
Pastor David Harrold
James 1: 9-11
James is continuing his encouragement on living with trials. He will tell us not focus on our situation and to focus on Christ. He tells us that we will spend eternity with Christ, if we are truly His. Because we are truly His, we can have hope, joy and confidence in this life.
9 Let the lowly brother glory in his exaltation, 10 but the rich in his humiliation, because as a flower of the field he will pass away. 11 For no sooner has the sun risen with a burning heat than it withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beautiful appearance perishes. So the rich man also will fade away in his pursuits.

Perseverance Under Trials
May 27, 2007
James 1:12
Pastor David Harrold
When trials come, what is our response? Do we trust that God will not allow something that will overwhelm us?
Or do we doubt Him and try to avoid the trial with our own ideas and effort? If we trust God and persevere through our trials, it shows our true faith in Him.
12Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.

Temptations and Our Response
June 3, 2007
Pastor David Harrold
James 1:13-16
Temptations are all around us. James shows us the cause of temptations in our lives and the results of those temptations if we give in to them.
13Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. 14But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. 15Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. 16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.

God’s Goodness
June 17, 2007
Pastor David Harrold
James 1:16-17
In James 1:13-15, James tells us not to blame God, or call God evil for the temptations that come in our life or the sin that we choose. Now, he is telling us that God does provide the good things in our lives and we should praise Him for it.
16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above,
and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.

Obedience to God’s Word
What is the purpose of hearing God’s Word? Is it just so we can know things? No. God’s Word should change our lives. If we are still living like the world and pursuing the things of the world, are we Christians? James answers these questions in our passage for today.
James 1:22-25

True Religion
There are innumerable well-established religions in the world today, with many more added each day. The trend today is for everyone to come up with their own religion, their own idea on who or what God is, or if He even exists. Everyone is encouraged to define their own style of worship. However, Scripture identifies the true God and how we are to worship Him.
James 1:26-27

Favoritism in the Church
Our society today seems to be going the direction of increasing separation of people based on many factors. People stay in groups defined by ethnic background, skin color, education, wealth, or part of town they live in. This attitude has come into the church. As Christians, we are not to divide the body for any of those reasons.
James 2:1-4

Caring for the Poor
We live in a world that is focused on self. We want to live our lives without any interference from others, especially those who can’t take care of themselves. We have come to live in a world that tries to insulate itself from the problems. We would like to ignore people that need help, or at most, just send a check to someone. God, however, is concerned with all of the affairs of all people.
James 2:5-7

Partiality Is A Sin
We live in a world that doesn’t mind separating people based on different factors. We can group people based on where they live, where they work or ethnic background.
But God says we are to treat everyone the same, regardless of position or place. James identifies partiality as a sin that will separate us from God for all eternity.
James 2:8-11

Show Mercy
Chapter 2 of James has discussed the sins of favoritism in the church, the neglect of the poor and partiality in our treatment of others. Now, James is calling us to live according to the grace we have been given by God through faith in Jesus Christ.
James 2:12-13

True Faith Works- Part I
We live in a society that is very religious. People believe that they can have faith in God, yet continue in their worldly lifestyle. They believe the faith they claim does not need to interfere with their life. On the other side, there are people who do good works, but do not have a faith in God. A true faith in God will manifest itself in good works.
James 2:14-20

Justification By Faith
Do a man’s works produce salvation? Or, does saving faith produce works? There has been much discussion about James 2:21-26 regarding works. Is James teaching in opposition to Paul about justification by faith alone? No, James is teaching that faith will produce works, as Paul does.

Teachers in the Church
God has called teachers to instruct us in His word and to be examples to the church. James continues his discussion about the Christian life with a warning to potential teachers. He is telling teachers to live above reproach. He also tells us teachers will be accountable for everything taught and for their conduct.
James 3:1

Controlling our Tongues
The words we say are an indicator of our heart. If we say things that are evil, it shows that our heart is evil.
If we say righteous things, we show our heart to be righteous.

Control of the Tongue Pt 1
The tongue is the window to our soul, as James made clear in V2-4.
Now, we need to see what controls the tongue and the effect that has on us, our families, our church and our Lord.
